Non-toxic diffuse goitre. Factors influencing the effect of thyroid medication.

چکیده
The use of thyroid preparations to reduce the size of non-toxic goitres is well established, as is their use in differentiating between high 1311 uptake rates due to thyrotoxicosis and those occurring in non-toxic goitres (Greer and Smith, 1954; Werner and Spooner, 1955). It would seem reasonable to expect that the amount by which the thyroidal 1311 uptake can be suppressed by thyroid preparatio9s might be an index of the likelihood of reducing goitre size by their administration. Other factors which might affect the response to the thyroid medication are duration of the goitre, the initial 1311 uptake rate, and the size of the goitre. The aim of this study was to assess the significance of these factors in the response of goitres to thyroid preparations.

Increased plasma concentration of epidermal growth factor in female patients with non-toxic nodular goitre.
OBJECTIVE Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is believed to be one of the most potent growth factors for the thyroid gland. DESIGN AND METHODS We tested plasma EGF concentrations (radioreceptor method) in patients with non-toxic nodular goitre (NNG). Blood samples from patients with NNG were collected on the day before the surgery, during subtotal thyroidectomy (sTx)--from peripheral and thyroid v...
متن کاملOutcome of 131I therapy in hyperthyroidism using a 550MBq fixed dose regimen
BACKGROUND Radioiodine is the treatment of choice for relapsed hyperthyroidism although the optimum protocol is uncertain. Fixed dose radioiodine is increasingly popular but responses may vary. AIM To assess the outcome of 131I therapy in hyperthyroidism using a standard dose regimen in a regional referral centre and to explore factors influencing outcome. METHODS We studied 449 patients (M...
متن کاملThyroid Hemiagenesis Associated with Hyperthyroidism
Thyroid hemiagenesis (TH), very rare congenital anomaly, is generally asymptomatic. We report two cases of TH with hyperthyroidism. Case One. The patient presented with signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis. Physical examination revealed asymmetric nodular goitre at right lobe. Biochemical analysis revealed the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism. Ultrasound showed multinodular hypertrophy in the right...
متن کاملThe relation of thyroid auto-immunity to round-celled infiltration of the thyroid gland.
The relationship between thyroid auto-immunity and the presence of lymphocytes in the thyroid gland has been analysed in patients with Graves' disease, toxic adenoma, and non-toxic nodular goitre. In all these conditions circulating antibody to thyroglobulin was significantly associated with lymphocytic infiltration. No similar correlation was established in the case of the complement-fixing an...
